CHRISTIAN FICTION SCAVENGER HUNT STOP #5 (Purple Team)
Welcome to the Spring 2015 Christian Fiction Scavenger Hunt! I am a part of TEAM PURPLE, and this is Stop #5. If you're just joining us, there are two loops-pink and purple-and they begin at Lisa Bergren's site and Robin Lee Hatcher's site respectively for stop #1. If you complete either the pink loop or purple loop, you can enter for a Kindle paperwhite and the 17 autographed books from that loop. If you complete BOTH loops, you can enter for the Grand Prize of a Kindle Fire HDX and ALL 34 autographed books.
BE SURE to keep track of BOTH the clue you'll find below the guest content AND the favorite number mentioned. You'll need the clues to enter for the loop prize and the special numbers mentioned in order to enter for the grand prize.
The Hunt begins at NOON Mountain time on April 16 and ends at MIDNIGHT Mountain time on April 19, 2015, so you have 3.5 days to complete all 32 stops, enter all individual, pink, purple, and Grand Prize contests and maximize your chances for a prize! Winners will be announced on April 20, 2015.
WARNING, please don't use Internet Explorer to navigate through the loops if you can. Some web sites won't show up using IE. Please use Chrome or Firefox if at all possible
Oh, and if you get lost along the way or find a broken link, a complete list of this loop with links can be found at our Purple Host's site.
One more quick note - you'll want to read all the way through to the bottom of this page, because I'm sponsoring a BONUS GIVEAWAY in conjunction with this scavenger hunt and that's where you'll find the details!

Have you wondered where the Amish practices of banning and shunning have their roots? Ban refers to excommunicating someone from the church. Shun means avoiding certain kinds of fellowship and interaction with someone who has been excommunicated.
In July 1887, nine conservative ministers along the Pennsylvania-Maryland border signed a letter to explain their interpretation of the Bible on these subjects to a bishop in Iowa. Here are a few excerpts from that letter.
"Jesus said, 'Regard them as heathen and publicans' (Matthew 16:18).
"But if the excommunicated one does not receive admonition, but goes to another church, shall the ban and shunning be lifted? I think not, because the transgressor could draw the entire church."
"I believe that if we speak loosely about the ban and shunning, we give a testimony that our principles can be violated in this part of Paul's teaching as he says, "Rooted and built up in him, and stablished [sic] in the faith, as ye have been taught. . ." (Colossians 2:6, 7)."
"Beloved, let us receive the teaching of Paul as he writes in Romans, chapter 16, verse 17: 'Now I beseech you brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offenses contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them."
When my research led me to the July 1887 letter, for the first time I read an original document that explained how the Amish of that time understood what the Bible said. While we might disagree now on how these verses were interpreted, I felt like I could begin to get into the heads of people I was writing about.
A few years later those same ministers faced divisions in their congregations based on differing understanding of when shunning must be imposed. Eventually this led to a split and the emergence of the "Beachy Amish." This is the historical backdrop explored in Meek and Mild, book 2 of the Amish Turns of Time series.
And speaking of Meek and Mild, here's the striking cover and back cover blurb from that very book:
Suddenly shun has become a serious word for Clara Kuhn. As 1917 approaches, her Amish church's aging bishop is coming down hard on members who dally in untraditional practices-like offering Sunday school for children-and Clara's gift for telling Bible stories to little ones collides with new mandates. The young Pennsylvania Amish woman had always moved freely over the state line to visit family in the more progressive Maryland district, but now those visits are coming under scrutiny by some members of Clara's church.
On the verge of accepting Andrew Raber's marriage proposal, Clara is unsure what to make of his new hobby to rehabilitate an abandoned Model T. Just how hard can they push against the bishop's wishes?
As the chasm widens between Old Order Amish and the Marylanders, and tensions rise between longtime friends and close-knit family, Clara and Andrew must look inward to examine their own hearts and consciences and, above all, seek Gottes wille-God's will.
If you agree with me that that sounds like a fabulous story, then you can pick up a copy of Meek and Mild at:
